Used Pontoon Boats: Fishing, Boat Covers And Seats

For taking leisure out to the lake, many boaters opt for pontoon boats. Pontoon boats differ from regular motorboats in that pontoon boats are flat on the bottom rather than rounded. Pioneered by Ambrose Weeres, a farmer from Minnesota, pontoon boats can be used for fishing, sightseeing or just enjoying the nice weather.

Weeres Industries, the pontoon boat company started in 1952 by Ambrose Weeres, makes several models of pontoon boats with features to accommodate any use a boater might have in store. Weeres' Sundeck Family LX 220 comes standard with a GPS system and fish locator to assist fishermen, as well as tilt steering, a four-speaker stereo system with CD player, a changing room and interior mood lighting. This 22- or 24-foot pontoon boat can also be fitted with a fiberglass motor cover and hydraulic steering, among other optional features. To assure a customer's fun out on the water will not be ruined, Weeres pontoon boats come standard with warranties. Every Weeres pontoon boat comes with a lifetime warranty on the chassis, seating frames and plywood decks, a five-year warranty on the carpeting and vinyl, and a year long warranty on everything else.

Besides the flat bottom, pontoon boats are similar in appearance to standard motorboats. They come with plenty of passenger seating and some even have hoods to put up in case of rain. And as with the average motorboat, boaters can buy accessories for their pontoon boat. The owner will want to look into boat covers, because pontoon boats should be covered when not in use. Boat covers are simply large, tarp-like coverings that permeate the entire top half of a pontoon boat. Websites such as BoatGearStore.com sell multiple brands of boat covers and offer price comparisons; Poly-Tec, for example, sells 22-foot boat covers for $169, while Sea Breeze charges $299 for their boat covers of the same length.

Boat seats can also be purchased separately. No matter what type of boat seats need to be replaced – bucket seats, corner benches, lounge seats – boaters can get what they need from sites such as Iboats.com. Bucket seats hold only one person, while lounge seat units can seat multiple passengers. Boaters can purchase a small corner section for their pontoon boat, as well as single unit seats that lift up to reveal a cooler inside. Replacing boat seats in pontoon boats can get just as expensive as buying boat covers; Iboats offers price comparisons on 27-inch lounge boat seats, and the prices do not go below the $200 mark.

The pontoon boats themselves can be pricey – often well over $10,000 – but there is a market for used boats for those looking to save money. On Iboats, boaters are selling their used boats for a fifth of the price of brand new pontoon boats. A 14-foot, 1995 Riviera Cruiser is currently going for under $3000, while a 16-foot Eagle from 1993 sells for $3,995. For a retro feel, an 18-foot 1986 Playbuoy costs $2,995. The boat seats have seen better days but the seller claims the pontoon boat itself runs well, and the boat seats still have a year or two left in them.

After purchasing a pontoon boat, the owner has taken on the responsibility of maintenance. The condition of the seats should be kept in check, and the deck must be cleaned as well. Insurance costs must also be factored in when purchasing pontoon boats. When the owner has these things taken care of, he can enjoy relaxing days of fishing and fun out on the lake with his pontoon boat.
