Mustang Racing: Street And Drag Racing

Mustang racing has evolved with the evolution of the Pony Car . Ford first offered the Mustang for sale in April of 1964. Twenty two thousand Mustangs were sold on the first day they were made available, and Mustangs were off to the races.
Mustang racing was reborn as a muscle car in 1969 when Ford introduced the Mach I, and Mustang racing took on a whole new dimension. The hot Mach I featured a big block 428 and the 1970 Boss 302 put Mustang race cars on the map in the Trans Am racing series. The Boss 429 was built to compete with race cars on the Nascar circuit but it never actually entered a race.
The oil embargo of the 1970s created a gasoline shortage and high prices. Facing high inflation and unemployment, Americans for the first time had to consider how much gasoline a car used and the muscle car era came to an abrupt, screeching halt. Auto manufacturers began producing economy cars and Mustang Racing had to rely on the older models because Ford transformed the once proud Mustang into a putt-putt economy model based on the Ford Pinto.
A Mustang racing rebirth occurred in 1995 with the introduction of the 250 Cobra R. This new model re-introduced Mustang as a muscle car, and from drag racing to street racing, Mustangs once again prowled the blacktop looking for challengers. The retro 'Stang introduced in 2005 has kicked off a muscle car revival that has not peaked yet, even with the high gasoline prices in 2007. With the production of the Shelby Cobra model cranking out 500 horsepower, Ford thundered a clear challenge to the other auto-makers. Mustang Racing is back and it is bad.
Mustang racing is as popular today as it has ever been. The National Mustang Racers Association (NMRA) sponsors Mustang racing events in seven eastern and southern states. Drag racing events are held from New Jersey to Kentucky where the 2007 series wraps up at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green with the 9th Annual Nitto Tire NMRA World Finals from the 4th-7th of October. This Mustang racing event will include the Vortech Outlaw 10.5 Shootout. Mustang racing at NMRA events are held in 12 classifications including Open Comp, Pure Street, Outlaw 10.5 and Pro 5.0.
Mustang racing has been popular since April 1964 and whether a driver has a classic 1970 Mach I Boss 429 or a 2007 Shelby GT500, the desire to eat Chevy's for lunch is still the same. Mustang racing events are great family fun, and what is more American than Fords and drag racing? Mustang racing should never be done on the street so drivers with the urge to test their pony only need to go down to the local race track, check out the rules, and get qualified as a driver. Mustang racing is a thrill that should not kill; so be safe out there.
